To start the 2016 season, the Slippery Rock University softball team won two of its first three games Friday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The team took its first win of the season with a 10-2 victory over Mercy College (Ny.) in six innings. Junior pitcher Carly DeRose took the mound by storm with seven strikeouts as she kept the Mavericks from scoring more than two runs. Leading on the offensive side was senior Katie Kaiser with a homerun and three RBI’s.

Slippery Rock also took its second game with a 7-3 win over Merrimack. There were hits for almost everyone in the SRU line up but sophomore Emily Nagle shined the most with a triple and two RBI’s.

Four of the seven runs scored by The Rock girls were unearned. Junior Caitlyn Baxter went 2-3 during the game.

The Rock fell short in its third game. The Felician Eagles scored two right off the bat after back to back walks from sophomore pitcher Brooke Dawson. The Eagles added one to its lead in the top of the fifth with two hits that led to an error and an unearned run. Senior Carly DeRose entered the game taking sophomore Brooke Dawson’s place on the mound in the top of the sixth. DeRose held Felician at three for the remainder of the game while the offense racked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth with a single from senior Ashley Samluk and a double from junior Caitlin Baxter.

The team will continue the opening weekend of the season Saturday when they face Le Moyne College (Ny.) and Mansfield University (Pa.).
