The Slippery Rock University tennis team returned to action on Friday with a 7-0 loss to Carnegie Mellon University.

The Rock, coming off almost a four month break since their last match against Millersville University on Oct. 7, were unable to get anything going over the Tartans, losing their first match of the 2018-2019 season.

SRU’s woes began early as the duo of junior Viola Lugmayr and Lois Page dropped an 8-4 loss to Melissa Strome and Danna Taylor. The duo of sophomore Lauren Fadden and senior Allie Welch followed with a loss of their own, falling 8-6 to Vinaya Rao and Jamie Vizelman. In the no. 2 doubles flight, junior Lacey Cohen and sophomore Olivia Warner lost to the Tartans’ Janabelle Wu and Courtney Ollis with a final of 8-5, to close out the doubles matchups.

Going winless in doubles, the Green and White’s struggles would continue into singles.

In the first flight of singles, Cohen, the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Singles Champion, lost with final scores of 6-2, 6-1.

Wu would go on to beat Warner with two scores of 6-1, while Beata Liberchuk took down Fadden with scores of 6-1, 6-0 and Victoria Chang took down Welch, 6-3, 6-0.

To close out the day, Vizelman took down Lugmayr with scores of 6-4, 6-7 and 10-4 and Rao bested Page, 7-4, 4-6 and 15-13.

The loss drops the women to 3-1 on the season while the Tartans get their third win of the season.

The Rock’s next match is set for Feb. 9 at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, New York. The match time is still to be announced.
