On Thursday, September 17, the Art Society took over forty students to explore the Carnegie Museum of Art and view the newest exhibition, If the word we, the 59th Carnegie International.
This exhibition displayed new and old works of art from 61 artists from around the world.
Alongside this exhibition, students were given the chance to explore the 1,800+ pieces of art that the Carnegie Museum of Art also had on display.
The Art Society is a club on campus that allows any student with an interest in art to join, giving individuals the opportunity to participate in art activities and gain a closer connection to the art community.
This organization also runs the SGA Art Gallery, which allows students to showcase their own works of art, and they host several events connected to art such as this one.
AJ Smith, a freshman at SRU, shared their thoughts on the trip and a piece of art that they personally enjoyed.
“This experience introduced me to a variety of different styles and works of art that I can hopefully incorporate into my own work one day. I personally liked the piece ‘Portrait of a Boy’ by John Singer Sargent. I just couldn’t look away from it,” Smith said.
Another SRU freshman, Carla Pinnelo, shared their opinion as well.
“This trip truly inspired me to create more art, and being able to see the statue ‘Walking Man I’ severely touched me with the meaning behind it. This experience helped me realize that having a career in the arts is for me,” Pinnelo said.
This trip was made possible by the Art Society and the efforts of Heather Hertel, who secured a grant to fund the trip and make it completely free for students.
Hertel applied for the Work-Based Learning Micro Grant through the Early College Work-Based Learning Program.
She was able to secure the grant, and with the help of Susan Bowser, implemented the money to plan this trip for SRU students.
