The month of April is recognized as Earth Month, and every year the Macoskey Center hosts various events to help engage individuals to learn about the environment.
Throughout the month, individuals were able to attend these events including Birds and Bagels, What’s the Tea and volunteer days at the center.
Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day, and the Macoskey Center will be hosting their Earth Day Open House to celebrate.
“The event will take place on April 22 from 4–7 p.m. at the Macoskey Center. It is open to all students and community members and will feature a variety of interactive tables, demonstrations and local partners,” Josie Hart, the Macoskey Center Marketing and Graphic Communication Intern, said.
Not only is Wednesday Earth Day, but the Macoskey Center’s birthday is also on the same day.
“We really just want to bring sustainability to life in a hands-on, approachable way for anyone who wants to come. Whether it’s students from Slippery Rock, students from the elementary school or even community members,” Hart said. “We are going to have a bunch of interactive stations with collaborators.”
Some of the activities and collaborators individuals can expect at the event include:
- Newspaper plant pot creation activity
- Sensory sand pit
- Honey tasting from the Rock Apiary
- Engineering heat transfer student poster presentations
- Hydroponics demonstration by Dream Invent Inspire
- Complimentary hummus bar and birthday cake from Aramark
- SRU President’s Commission on Sustainability
- Citizens Environmental Association of the Slippery Rock Area (CEASRA) sharing information on local environmental concerns
Through this event, the Macoskey Center is able to celebrate the center’s birthday while educating individuals about the earth.
“I am very excited to see the hydroponic demonstration, but also the honey tasting with the Rock Apiary. That’s going to be held out in our greenhouse right next to the apiary,” Hart said.
“Any honey that you get on campus, like in Boozel, is straight from the apiary in the Macoskey Center’s backyard,” Hart said.
Hart shared what she hopes students and individuals take away from this event.
“Students specifically, I really just want them to know more about the Macoskey Center and kind of know it exists and that they are welcome to come back anytime. We have trails that are open to students and the public during all daylight hours, We love when people come visit, come in and stop by and ask questions or buy any of our merch. So really, just for people to come back,” Hart said.
After Earth Day, the Macoskey Center will also be hosting two more events during the month of April.
One event will be a Sustainable Cooking Class – Zero-waste Cake Pops & Foraged Flavors. This event will be hosted on April 28 from 12:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Macoskey Center, individuals must RSVP prior to the event.
Another event to be hosted is The Macoskey Center Pop-Up Shop to give students the chance to purchase on campus. The center will be selling their homemade bath and body products, seasonal herbs and produce, and merch.
The Pop-Up Shop will be held on Thursday, April 30, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Smith Student Center lobby. Only card and flex will be accepted.
The Macoskey Center holds various events throughout the semester; more information can be found on their Linktr.ee at https://linktr.ee/macoskeycenter.
