Through the Veteran’s Center, the Office of Multicultural Development (OMD) celebrated Constitution Day Monday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Suite on the second floor of the Smith Student Center.

Graduate Assistant for the OMD Samantha Walker said Constitution Day is a day to celebrate the signing of the Constitution in 1787.

“We celebrate this day to reflect on the values America was founded on,” Walker said.

To assist with the reflection on the values and ideologies our founding fathers had while our nation was still in its early stages, Walker devised a 10-question quiz that was set up all around the Suite.  Large sticky pads were attached to windows of each of the offices in the Suite, such as the University Program Board (UPB), Student Government Association (SGA), Black Action Society (BAS) and more.

Students and faculty who attended the celebration could walk around during the event and find the sticky pads that furnished the area and answer questions; some of these questions were centered around early American history and ideals.  Other questions found on the pads were focused on the offices located in the Suite, such as those affiliated with the Center for Service, Involvement, and Leadership (CSIL) and the OMD, the Suite itself and the services provided there.

The CSIL helps students get involved on campus through activities, organizations and leadership development programs, and advises all student organizations, while the OMD serves to promote positive interactions with all cultures while providing diverse opportunities for students.  Both offices being located within the same area, the Suite, serves to foster collaboration between the diverse offices and the student interests at SRU, Walker said.

Dozens of students and faculty attended the Constitution Day Celebration, making the event an absolute success in Walker’s eyes.

“Even those who regularly spend time in the Suite came in and spent some of their time reacquainting themselves with the Constitution,” Walker said.  “Some also picked up pocket Constitutions that the Suite provided for the Celebration.”

Walker said the OMD hopes that everyone who attended the Constitution Day Celebration is able to understand those values that America was founded on centuries ago, as well as reflect on how those values have stayed true through the years and changes this nation has experienced and withstood.

Later in the semester, on Nov. 11, the OMD plans on hosting a Veteran’s Day breakfast to celebrate the veterans as well as all the military-connected students at SRU.
