In less than two weeks, SRU students will be completing their finals and heading into the summer season.

The Rocket was interested in learning how SRU students have been preparing for their finals.

The last week of the semester can come with a lot stress from studying to do well on exams, working to complete projects or preparing to give class presentations.

The Rocket spoke with a few students to discuss how they are feeling and how they prepare as the semester comes to an end.

Juliet Cummings, a freshman communication major said that she feels “pretty good” for finals, but wants to make sure she is prepared and knows all of her material.

So close to the end of the semester, it can be difficult to feel motivated to study.

Dominic Frye, a junior communication major, shared that he stays motivated to study for finals by keeping his phone out of sight.

Most of the students discussed that their study habits consisted of using flashcards.

“For anatomy, we have the lab part I do a lot of active recall, I use a lot of flashcards. And just going to the library, writing down everything on a whiteboard, that’s what I do for my big tests,” Morgan Lowther, a freshman double majoring in exercise science pre-PT and dance, said.

Frye also shared that making flashcards through Quizlet helps him study for his tests.

Students then gave advice to others on how they prepare for finals.

“My advice would just be to try your best. There’s only so many hours in a day, and you just need to get done what you can get done,” Lowther said.

Frye shared that it is important to have a balance between work and the activities you enjoy.

“You could do homework every night and that could be your whole night,” Frye said. “My big thing in general that I didn’t do my freshman fall [semester] is, I didn’t do any hobbies I like, so it would just be school and that’s it. So, I would say make sure you’re always giving yourself time to do your hobbies.”

Students concluded by how they reward themselves after completing finals.

“After my physics final last semester, I went to Yumberries and I got Yumberries because I was like, oh my goodness I did it. It’ll probably be the same for the finals I have this semester, but at the end, I’ll probably go to Yumberries or go to Roosters and just celebrate that my finals are over and [that] I made it through the semester,” Lowther said.

“Usually, I’m done by Wednesday of finals week, so I’m always getting a McDonald’s cookie. Maybe two,” Frye said.

SRU offers many resources to assist students with schoolwork, including the Writing Center and Tutoring Center.

The Bailey Library will also offer extended hours with private study rooms during finals week.
