Slippery Rock baseball took a 5-2 win from Mansfield University at Jack Critchfield Park on Monday.
The Rock got their 15th win of the year when they defeated the Mansfield Mountaineers 5-2. The White and Green collected eight hits, one being an extra-base hit. They also tallied four stolen bases and drew four walks. On the bump they recorded 7 strikeouts. The Rock only allowed five hits and gave up no walks.
On the bump to start for SRU was two-way senior Robert Herr who pitched four innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
Senior Mark Wilbur got the win in relief. He pitched three innings, allowing only one hit and striking out three.
Coming in for the save was Joey Vanzin. The sophomore pitched two innings, allowing one hit and picking up his third save, which ties him with Mark Wilbur for the team lead.
The Rock picked up their first run in the bottom of the third on a ground ball to the pitcher from catcher Treston Nemeth that scored Clay Wiesen.
In the bottom of the fifth, Nemeth singled to left field bringing in Zach Streightif. Nemeth would later send a single to left in the 7th that scored Strieghtif again. In the same frame, Cam Panyko Morris reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Gage Gillott, bringing the lead to 4-2. The final run of the inning came when Brandon Butler singled up the middle to bring in Michael Kitko.
The standings of the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) West division currently sit with Slippery Rock at 4th with a 15-9 overall record and a 5-3 record in conference. Clarion still leads the way in the conference with a 15-10 record but a 7-1 record in the conference.
The Rock returns to action with a double-header at Jack Critchfield Park on Friday, the first game starting at 1 p.m.
