
Slippery Rock softball hosted Wheeling University for a doubleheader at Kasnevich Field on
Tuesday, winning both games in an exciting fashion.
The Rock took the first game 5-2 behind a strong pitching performance before rallying late to claim a thrilling 15-14 extra-inning victory in game two.
Game One
In the opener, Slippery Rock controlled the game behind a dominant outing from Alexsa
Hurd, who pitched a complete game while striking out ten batters and allowing just two
runs on eight hits.
Wheeling struck first with a run in the second inning, but The Rock quickly responded.
Sydney Brown tied the game with an RBI triple in the bottom half, and Alexsa Hurd put
Slippery Rock ahead with a run, scoring double in the third.
The Rock added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings, including an RBI double
from Julia Nutter. Hurd closed out the game strong, securing the 5-2 victory.
Game Two
The second game was an offensive battle, with both teams combining for 29 runs and 34
hits. Slippery Rock found themselves in an early hole, trailing 9-2 after three innings.
The Rock chipped away at the deficit with two runs in the sixth before a five-run explosion
in the seventh highlighted by a home run from Alexsa Hurd which tied the game at 9-9.
After Wheeling regained the lead with four runs in the eighth, Slippery Rock refused to back
down.
They answered with four runs of their own, fueled by clutch hits from Kennedy and Nutter.
The Rock completed the comeback in the ninth, as Mansfield tied the game with a double
before Kennedy delivered the game-winning RBI to walk it off with a 15-14 win.
Kayla Williams earned the win in relief, pitching in the final inning to secure the victory.
Now 6-12 on the season, Slippery Rock looks to build off their momentum as they prepare
for their next matchup. The Rock heads to face Pitt-Johnstown on Friday for their conference opener.
