Slippery Rock baseball won 5-3 in an exciting ten-inning game over Walsh University Tuesday evening at Biery Stadium in Ohio.
Robert Herr crushed the ball into right field in the final frame before an error by Walsh allowed two runners to score, giving The Rock a 5-3 lead. Herr was credited with two runs batted in (RBI), totaling three on the day for him.
Tyler Cerame had an eventful day, scoring twice and delivering a game-tying sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, knotting the game back up at 3-3. Cerame went 2-for-3 with a walk and one RBI.
The Green and White had a stellar day on the mound, tallying 11 total strikeouts.
Michael Kitko looked great on the bump, shutting down the last three innings and earning four strikeouts. The two-way player also had a hit at the plate.
Walsh started making noise in the tenth inning with runners on first and second. Kitko came to the rescue, recording a punch-out to end the game.
He was also rewarded with the win on the mound.
Walsh got on the board quickly, smashing a solo homer to deep left field in the first inning. They managed to bring another run across on a double play in the second, extending their lead to 2-0.
Slippery Rock had a cold start on offense, only recording two hits in through four innings.
However, with a little bit of small ball, the Rock were able to push their first run across on a sacrifice fly in the fifth, cutting Walsh’s lead to one.
The Rock recorded three hits in the seventh and tied the game back up at 2-2 from another sacrifice fly before going on to win the game in extras.
Seven out of the ten batters to step up to the plate recorded a hit today for the Rock, logging 10 hits as a team.
The White and Green currently sit at 9-6 open conference play with Pitt-Johnstown, hosting a double-header on Friday and then traveling to Pitt-Johnstown for another double-header on Saturday.
