The Slippery Rock Student Government Association (SRSGA) was called to session on Oct. 16 for a formal meeting. Senators provided reports, new clubs were approved and budgets were voted on.

Committee and Officer Reports

SRSGA President Conner Pavlicko started reports by summarizing his meeting with the board of student government presidents and PASSHE Chancellor.

Pavlicko explained the meeting provided an opportunity to understand how other PASSHE universities were performing. He included that the board discussed artificial intelligence with the board and chancellor.

“We are working on that [AI] policy within our senate,” Pavlicko stated. “And we’re looking forward to working collaboratively with the university to implement what we think is best for the students and hopefully a policy for the university.”

Pavlicko provided an update on the intramural fields. The final designs have been selected and bidding will begin. SRSGA has currently approved $1.6 million for the field upgrade.

Open Forum

College of Business Senators summarized their meetings with College of Business Dean Prasad Vemala. Vemala provided the senators with details regarding the new finance lab. The lab provides a chance for students to work with technology and programs used on Wall Street. Vemala also discussed the college of business five-year plan as well as the College of Business’s position on AI.

Senator Connor Grassar spoke about their meeting with the College of Education senators and interim dean James Preston. Preston explained resource gaps present in the College of Education, specifically clearances. Senators suggested installing fingerprinting kiosks on campus. Preston also encouraged SRSGA to continue propping up educators and communicating openly with the College of Business.

New Clubs and Initiatives

SRSGA approved an amendment to their constitution streamlining the senator dismissal policy. The vacant Speaker of the Senates duty has been shifted to Vice President of Internal Affairs. The speaker originally was responsible for issuing the first warning to senators.

Other duties of the vacant position will be shifted as well as other constitutional amendments. SRSGA will host open forums regarding these changes in coming weeks.

Senators Mason Powell, Jada Phillips, Lacey Mario and Natalie Banks were approved as members of SRSGA newly formed judiciary board. The board is focused on constitutional amendments and rule changes.

The SRSGA approved three new clubs: the Women’s Government Association, the Rocky Mountain Club and the Academic Decathlon Society.

Senator Madison McGuirk spoke in favor of the Academic Decathlon Society during open form. They described their personal experience with the academic decathlon.

“It has helped me, it has helped so many others with their interview skills, their public speaking, and a great way for students to academically succeed,” McGuirk said.
