Ryan Mills is a senior communication major with a concentration in advertising and a minor in graphic design.
Last year, Mills transferred to SRU and joined the SRU Club Softball team on campus. She is now the president of the organization.
The team competes in the National Club Softball Association. The organization is D1 and competes in the North Atlantic West Conference.
“So, we play in what we call a series; so a series of three games against schools like Pittsburgh, Kent State, West Virginia University and Penn State University,” Mills said. “Then we compete to go to the regional tournament.”
The organization competes against other schools and holds practices once a week.
“I’ve been playing softball since I was 10 years old, so I just wanted to keep playing [in] college. I played for the junior college level two years ago at my community college and I wasn’t done playing,” Mills said.
There are about 16 students who are part of the team.
“Anybody can try out. We do like to emphasize that we are competitive, but we still like to have fun,” Mills said.
Mills discussed what having the opportunity to be on the team has been like.
“For me, this was my first year as president, so it kind of gave me a way to step up in a leadership role and showcase what I know of the game and help other girls build off of each other. [I’m] not really a coach as president, but it’s been nice to share what I have learned over my [years] of playing,” Mills said.
Mills shared that her favorite part of playing club softball at SRU has been the friends she has made.
“My current roommate, I actually met last year on the team, and now we live together, so that’s been fun. It’s a good way to make friends,” Mills said.
