Slippery Rock Student Government Association (SRSGA) held a formal meeting on Monday, March 8 at 5 p.m. in the Smith Student Center to approve a new senator, recognize a new student organization and review new initiative requests. The meeting also featured At-Large Senator Ray Eschenbach as a guest speaker who discussed upcoming plans for the SRSGA advocacy project.
Guest Speaker
SRSGA At-Large Senator Ray Eschenbach shared updates regarding the upcoming SRSGA student advocacy project. A small group of SRSGA senators will visit Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to advocate to elected officials regarding student concerns and interests, such as tuition affordability.
“Now, there are a multitude of reasons for our desire to meet with various officials, the most recent justification being the proposed state budget. Which, if that $625 million is approved in that state budget, could lead to tuition increases across all PASSHE institutions. So, this no longer becomes an SRU concern, but a PASSHE concern,” Eschenbach said.
Eschenbach explained how Connor Pavlicko, SRSGA President, has been gathering letters of support from fellow members of the board of student government presidents. In doing this, SRSGA advances their arguments and advocacy along with showing elected officials that they are dedicated to the success, safety and justice of students.
“We will keep coming back year after year to show our dedication to student needs and rights, especially in the PASSHE system,” Eschenbach said. “To ensure that all state-owned universities are given their deserved care and consideration, and the pursuit of high-quality education and inclusivity that is accessible for all.”
Eschenbach emphasized the need for funding, explaining that it helps secure outlets for voicing student needs, rights and concerns while maintaining connections with Slippery Rock students and other interest groups.
Funding also supports SRSGA’s current and future advocacy initiatives, including this year’s advocacy project in April. The money raised will help cover travel expenses, marketing materials and other costs associated with the trip while ensuring advocacy efforts can continue in future years.
“It will lead to long-term donor stewardship with students, SRU alumni and donors,” Eschenbach said. “And it will contribute to the continuation and enhancement of funding for new and innovative advocacy initiatives.”
Approved New Initiative Requests
SRSGA approved two new initiative requests from campus organizations including Club Basketball, which asked for funds to pay referees, and the Swimming and Diving Club, which requested funds to cover travel expenses for an upcoming meet.
Recognized Student Organizations
SRSGA recognized one new student organization called Roots and Shoots.
Inducted Senators
Motions to approve SRSGA’s newly inducted At-Large Senator, Delaney Mehrtens, passed uncontested.
