October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual time to support those affected by breast cancer.

This month is dedicated to educating the public and encouraging individuals to learn about risk reduction, screening and treatment.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in women.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 321,910 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. in 2026.

Health care professionals recommend that people have a discussion with their doctor about screening and risks, since most risk factors for breast cancer vary depending on the individual.

For many people, supporting breast cancer awareness can simply be wearing pink or reposting content on social media.

While these are common ways to show support, awareness campaigns give opportunities for anyone to help by donating and volunteering for organizations that focus on breast cancer awareness.

The American Cancer Society and the National Breast Cancer Foundation are both options to help fund research and awareness, both of which have places to donate on their websites.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues throughout October, it serves as a reminder that access to reliable information and resources can help everyone make more informed decisions about their health.

The American Cancer Society and Women’s Center on Slippery Rock’s campus both offer resources for learning more about breast cancer awareness and risk reduction.
