It is currently Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) and organizations on campus have been partnering together to host events for students to participate in.
HHM began on Sept. 15 and lasts until Oct. 15.
Every year, individuals have the opportunity to attend various events put on by organizations including the Spanish Program, the Spanish Club, SOL, the Frederick Douglass Institute, Inclusive Excellence and other SRU organizations.
Elena Six, the Spanish Club president, spoke to The Rocket about Hispanic Heritage Month.
“This year, HHM is Sept. 15 to Oct.15 where we take a month to celebrate the culture and history of Hispanic and Latino Americans. It’s a great opportunity to learn about other cultures, especially if you are not of Hispanic or Latino descent,” Six said.
Six shared what events she loves the most during HHM.
“’Cafe y Pan’ on October 8 on the bookstore patio during common hour will have lots of different coffees and pastries. As an avid lover of coffee myself, it is a must to go. There is also ‘Food, Culture and Flavor’ at the Macoskey Center on October 14 at 5:00 p.m. Anything with Hispanic food would be great,” Six said.
Six also shared how these events are beneficial for students on campus.
“You can really envelop yourself in the culture, especially if you have never been exposed to it before. It will give students an opportunity to recognize and celebrate our differences,” Six said.
Some upcoming events for the rest of the month include the following.
Food, Culture and Flavor, at the Macoskey Center hosted by the Frederick Douglass Institute and the LLCW Spanish Program on Oct. 14, 5:00 p.m.
Celebracion! Hispanic Heritage Voice Recital, at Swope Music Hall hosted by the Music Department and BIPOC-PAVA.
Individuals can learn more information about upcoming activities and events on CORE.
“To find events, go onto CORE and find one you find interesting. Come bringing an open heart and mind and learn something you never knew,” Six said.
