Slippery Rock University’s men’s rugby team is building toward another championship run, entering its upcoming matchup against Robert Morris University with an undefeated record and aspirations of capturing its first national title in 15s rugby.

The Rock holds a 7-0 overall record, including a 4-0 mark in National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Division III competition. SRU has outscored its opponents by more than 300 points this season, continuing a tradition of success that includes four consecutive Allegheny Rugby Union Conference Championships.

SRU opened its Division III schedule with a 60-10 victory against Xavier University on Sept. 26 before defeating Robert Morris 67-7 on Oct. 3. The Rock followed with a 95-0 shutout against Hillsdale College on Oct. 10 and a 45-17 win over Franciscan University on Oct. 17.

The team also earned victories against Division II opponents Ohio University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania to begin its fall campaign.

With another conference championship within reach, the Rock is also looking toward national competition. The program has won two national championships in sevens rugby and now hopes to capture its first in the traditional 15-player format.

“After winning the conference four consecutive years and being ranked top two in the country, there are expectations of postseason success,” said Justin Nowelle, senior open side flanker #7. “The team is more and more hungry each and every year. It’s championship or nothing for Rock in the last couple of years.”

Head coach Matt Heasley and assistant coach Clint McConnell have helped develop the team through consistent practices and preparation. Recently, SRU has emphasized the “jackle,” a technique used to contest possession and force turnovers following a tackle.

The team also practices line outs, scrums, penalty plays and kicks to prepare for the challenges of postseason competition.

Beyond its on-field preparation, SRU’s team chemistry has played a significant role in its success. Players practice four days a week and regularly spend weekends together sharing meals or watching football, building relationships that carry onto the field.

Nowelle credited Heasley and McConnell for establishing a strong foundation throughout the program.

“Head coach Matt Heasley and assistant coach Clint McConnell have built this team from the ground up,” Nowelle said. “It would only add to our legacy to bring home a third championship since I’ve been playing.”

With a strong start, an experienced coaching staff and championship expectations, Slippery Rock hopes to turn another successful season into a historic national title run.

The Rock returns to action Saturday, Oct. 31, hosting Robert Morris with an opportunity to complete the season sweep. SRU will look to maintain its unbeaten record while continuing to build momentum toward postseason play.
