Slippery Rock volleyball picked up one win across four matches at the Grand Rapids Downtown Classic over the weekend, finishing 1-3 at the event and moving to 3-4 overall.
Friday – Game One
After scoring the first point of the match, SRU struggled to generate offense early, trailing 16-3 before a service error by Sidney Shepherd got SRU back in the point column. Cedarville maintained control throughout and secured the opening frame following a service error by freshman Ellie Friedrichs. The second set was proved to be a closer battle, with the teams tied at 13 midway through. Cedarville responded with another decisive run, taking 10 straight points to win 25-15. The Yellow Jackets closed out the sweep with a 25-16 victory in the third.
Marley Annis led SRU with six kills, while Paityn Krause finished with nine assists in the 3-0 loss.
Friday – Game Two
The Rock earned their lone win of the weekend in Friday’s second match, sweeping Post University.
SRU dominated the opening set, taking six of the first seven points and cruising to a 25-13 win. The second set was more competitive, but The Rock held steady late to secure a 25-21 victory. In the third, SRU jumped out to a 21-9 lead and closed the match with a 25-14 finish.
Annis again paced the offense with 16 kills, followed by Ava Haynes with 12. SRU outperformed Post in every major statistical category, including a 7-1 advantage in blocks and a 4-1 edge in aces.
Saturday – Game One
SRU trailed just 14-11 early in the first set before Davenport pulled away for a 25-16 win. The Rock responded in the second, taking the first four points and battling through a tight frame to win 26–24 and even the match.
Despite the momentum shift, the Panthers regained momentum in the third, edging SRU 25-23, then closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth.
Emry Rumbaugh led The Rock with 13 kills, and Abby Kolcum recorded 20 assists.
Saturday – Game Two
SRU closed the weekend with a three-set loss to Saginaw Valley State.
The Cardinals controlled the first two sets by a combined 50-40 margin, before breaking the third set open with a 12-point that pushed the match out of reach. The Cardinals rode that momentum to a 25–9 finish, completing the sweep. Rumbaugh posted nine kills, and Krause added 14 assists.
Slippery Rock returns home to host the SRU Invitational from Sept. 11-12 at the Morrow Field House.
