Slippery Rock field hockey went on the road Tuesday to face Frostburg State University, but fell 2-1 in the final minutes of the fourth period.
The first period was scoreless, with both teams managing just one shot.
The Rock struck early in the second period when Lucy Hutchinson found the back of the net less than two minutes in.
It was the junior’s fifth goal of the season, scoring in every game but one so far.
Slippery Rock attempted to solidify their lead after a shot attempt came after a penalty corner, but was blocked by Frostburg’s goalie Zoe Barnes.
FSU retaliated with back-to-back shot attempts midway through the quarter. Both were denied by Emily Newton.
This is the sophomore goalie’s first season appearing in games for the White and Green. So far, Newton has faced 75 shots, only allowing nine.
The Bobcats tied the game with under four minutes left in the half with a shot delivered by their Layla Lagunas, assisted by 2 of her teammates.
Slippery Rock was unable to get another shot off for the remainder of the half.
A minute and 34 seconds into the third period, Hutchinson delivered another shot attempt but came up empty after a block. Riley Cloude came with another shot for The Rock just a minute later, but nothing came of it.
FSU had four shots of their own through the third period, but failed to find the back of the net again until the fourth period, where they broke the tie to take the win with just under six minutes left in the game.
SRU closed out the period with two more shot attempts from Julia Boettler and Roz Mikulak, but came up short.
Slippery Rock will return to action to start the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play against Millersville University on their home turf.
