Slippery Rock scored a big conference win over the California University Vulcans on
Wednesday. The Rock (7-6-2, PSAC 4-3-0) scored their third straight victory over the Cal U
(2-7-3, PSAC 1-3-3), the game was their third straight 1-0 win. All seven of the Rock’s wins
have been shutouts to this point.
The only goal came in the 59th minute from Mo Kanani, the goal was assisted by Brian
McCarthy. The goal was Kanani’s third goal of the season so far, and all three of the Rock’s
game winning goals in the past three games have came from Kanani. Before the Mercyhurst game, Kanani had not scored a goal this season, but has now accounted for all of the Rock’s goals in three conference wins.
The Rock led the game with 12 shots and was able to register five of them on goal, and
seven of those shots came in the second half. The Rock held Cal U to only five shots, and let them only take one in the second half. Slippery Rock five corner kicks and held Cal U one, which they took in the second half. Cal U committed 14 fouls and had a yellow card on Negus Johnson in the 62nd minute and the Rock had 12 fouls.
Alejandro Fernandez recorded five shots and had shot on goal, which led both teams. Abdallah Bangura was also able to take two shots, although neither were on target. Slippery Rock had five other players who took one shot, including Cory Olix, Kanani, and Ramses Minaya. For Cal U, they had five different players take a shot and three players were able to get a shot on target.
The Rock and Cal u are now tied in the all-time series 21-21-3, and has a 13-10-2 record
at home against the Vulcans. The Rock will play three more games this season, with two of the last three being away games. Slippery Rock is still competing for a playoff spot, and the last three games will go a long way in deciding the Rock’s fate.
Slippery Rock will face its next test on Saturday as they travel to Mercyhurst for a 4 p.m. showdown.
