The Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team began its season on Monday afternoon in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania against Westminster. As they had the previous two years, the women won their opener, beating the Titans in a shutout.
The doubles teams got out to a quick start, barely allowing Westminster only a single point and winning every match easily. The first doubles pairing, consisting of veterans Carla Corrachano-Moracho and Lacey Cohen, dominated Westminster’s Gabriele Eaborn and Julia Serbati in an 8-0 match win.
The second-flight duo of Viola Lugmayr and Olivia Warner won their match 8-1 before two Rock newcomers, Lauren Fadden and Amy Varckette, repeated the dominance.
Corrochano-Moracho and Cohen won in another 8-0 dispatching, this time against the Titans’ Casey Barton and Makenna Robinson.
The singles followed suit, reeling off six straight match victories to secure a 9-0 win. Lacey Cohen, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s selection as Freshman of the Year in 2016, opened singles play with a first-flight 6-2, 6-2 victory against Eaborn.
Corrochano-Moracho, Fadden, and Allie Welch were perfect in the second, fifth, and sixth flights respectively over Westminster’s Patricia Pivaronas, Ashley Walsh, and Barton. Lugmayr and Warner left with identical 6-1, 6-1 wins in the third and fourth singles competitions.
The win dropped Westminster to a 1-3 record on the season while Slippery Rock will pause from team play for a brief period of time to send members of its roster to compete in individual competition at the 2017 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships in Erie from September 16-18.
