The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team was defeated by Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday 8-1  to begin the spring season.

The loss drops The Rock to a 3-2 record on the season while Carnegie Mellon improves to 5-0. CMU was ranked sixth heading into the match with The Rock.

This is the first match for The Rock in close to four months. The tennis season is broken into two separate halves, with the bulk of the action occurring in the spring season. The off-season consisted of physical conditioning and training for the second half of their season.

The day’s play began with doubles, as SRU was swept by CMU. The first and third doubles teams produced close matches against the Tartans of CMU.

Sophomores Nina Barbano and Carla Corrochano Morocho lost to Cori Sidell and Minami Makino 8-5. Barbano and Morocho came into play ranked No. 15 in the doubles division in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region. Juniors Tiffany Kollah and Kylee Woodman lost their third-tier doubles match to Abbey Hamstra and Nicholle Torres 8-3.

The sweep of SRU in doubles play was completed as freshman Amanda Bruscemi and junior Stephanie Fortier were bested by Brooke Tsu and Jamie Vizelman 8-0.

SRU headed into singles play down 3-0 and looked to get back on track and play catch-up.

Moracho was the sole winner in singles play for The Rock, winning her match in the first tier 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. With this win, Moracho improved to 5-3 in singles play this season.

Barbano and Kollah also gave good performances at the second and third singles but came up short of  a victory. Barbano lost to Sidell 6-3, 6-4 and Kollah fell to Torres 6-2, 6-3.

Vizelman defeated Bruscemi 6-1, 6-1 at the fourth singles, Katie Lai beat Fortier 6-3, 6-2 at the fifth singles. Finally, Charlotte Deiss bested freshman Allie Welch in sixth singles 6-4, 6-1 to conclude the match and give CMU the win.

The Rock will look to improve off this performance in its next match-up on Saturday against Alderson-Broaddus University.

Match time is set for 3 p.m. in Philippi, West Virginia as The Rock looks to get back on track.
