Miss Rocket,

Advice on trying to make a first move?

Sincerely,

Mr. Lovestruck

Mr. Lovestruck,

I understand that it can be scary. It sounds cliche, but genuinely just be nice and open to talking about whatever the conversation flows to. Trying too hard can come across as pushy or annoying. Don’t feel the need to agree with everything they say; sometimes differences can make a conversation more interesting. Keep in mind if it’s your first time speaking to them that the goal of the conversation is to learn and gauge compatibility.

If it’s someone you already know and have built a foundation with, make sure to be honest and try to see where their head may be regarding your relationship. Even if you’re unsure, you never know what conversations may pay off!

It can also benefit both of you if you offer up a solid plan to meet with them in the future. Set a date and time and stick to it; that will show that you care to put in effort with them. Little efforts and little gestures can go a long way for a lot of people.

If you want ideas on specific gestures to try, flowers are always welcome. You could also try to find out their favorite candy or drink to surprise them with. Find something to compliment other than their looks; a deeper compliment can mean even more sometimes. (Though, paying a compliment to someone’s smile or eyes also never hurts!)

The most common advice the other staff members offered me is being bold and upfront. Having confidence can go a long way in showing interest and effort. Be yourself and don’t try to put on a front or act like someone you’re not. Most of the time whoever you’re talking to will be able to tell. Even if they can’t at first, the facade will fall apart eventually. Also make sure to be an active listener and cognizant of not speaking over them. Being attentive and invested in what the other person is saying shows that you care.

Sincerely,

Miss Rocket
