Entering SRU as a freshman, I was in the biology 3+3 Pre-Chiropractic program, destined—or so I thought—to end up in the cornfields of Davenport, Iowa at Palmer Chiropractic. The last thing I expected to do in my college career was to work for our student newspaper, The Rocket, for two-and-a-half years.
After roughly a year of trying my best to figure out how to solve chemical equations and learning how sea bass and pterodactyls were zoologically related—and how all of that somehow related to chiropractic—I made the jump to multimedia journalism in my sophomore year. I am so glad I made that jump to communication, specifically multimedia journalism. Although in hindsight it was definitely a reactive move, it was the best decision I made in my collegiate career. If it wasn’t for Dr. Quinn dragging me over to The Rocket office in my second semester as a communication major, my life would look a whole lot different—thank you Dr. Quinn.
Collaborating with all of the bright minds here shaped me into the person I am today. It built hard skills I can use in my career, brought me out of my comfort zone and, most importantly, I had a great time with everyone throughout the years. I am so thankful, not only for everyone at The Rocket, but everyone I’ve met within the greater Slippery Rock community.
There are too many of you on staff to name, so I’ll keep it short and sweet. It was the greatest honor to work for one of the most decorated student newspapers at the collegiate level, and with some of the hardest-working people I know. The number of hours spent at unholy times of the night during a print week will forever be engrained in my mind. In a weird way I am going to miss it.
Lastly, thank you Dr. Fleming for all the hard work you do behind the scenes. Creating and overseeing such a welcoming pre-professional environment is no easy task. Thank you for being one of my greatest mentors and helping me lead this organization last spring. It was a good run. Bye for now, everyone, and thank you all.
