Diversity, equity and inclusion. Words we all hear but don’t really understand the importance of. Since the beginning of this year, DEI has been under attack by the government—tearing down progressive initiatives and new executive orders aimed at fair and equal housing and employment.
Most of what we hear in the media is how DEI is bad and “stealing jobs” for unqualified people, that is simply not the case. This has led to a deeper argument of removing DEI in schools and universities across the country giving students less opportunities for growth and learning.
According to the American Council on Education, diversity enriches educational experience. This comes in a multitude of ways from seeing and hearing new perspectives, discussing beliefs, and retelling experiences. All of this shows students a new way of thinking about the world and allows them to approach new situations with confidence as they are more comfortable with a wider range of ideas.
This confidence also allows more opportunities for personal growth, prepares students to become good citizens, and leads to an overall healthier society. People are challenging harmful stereotypes, engaging critical thinking, and learning to communicate with people from all different backgrounds. This then leads to strengthening communities and workplaces later in life.
Post graduates come into a workplace understanding different ways of thinking, cultural backgrounds, and even encourage new and progressive ideas. All of this fosters mutual respect and teamwork. In fact, 56% of US workers say DEI is important in the workplace, with a majority stating that DEI has a positive impact on their work environment according to Pew Research Center.
So, while times are tough, support the people around you. Encourage and foster a safe environment, many of us need it now more than ever.
