Captain America: Brave New World is the 35th film in the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the fourth film in the Captain America film series as well as a follow-up to the Disney Plus series: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The film follows Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, as the new Captain America finding himself at the center of an international incident.
Going into this movie, I was pessimistic given the bad buzz with ongoing reshoots and the mixed reviews especially didn’t help the film’s case either. But I have enjoyed the previous Captain America films in the past and I was curious about how they would handle Sam Wilson officially being Captain America since he has never used the Super Soldier Serum.
Starting with what I liked, Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross was definitely the best character in the entire film. He had a solid arc and when he finally becomes Red Hulk, it’s pretty cool to see.
The action is overall entertaining to watch but you expect it to be when you go see a superhero film. The last thing on my list of positives is the fact that they at least tried to tie up loose ends left in previous films such as Eternals and The Incredible Hulk.
That being said, the film itself is a mixed bag. Anthony Mackie is fine as Sam Wilson but he’s not exactly the most charismatic person, and I thought his partner was annoying at times. The main villain, Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader, was laughable, especially in his design.
Giancarlo Esposito is in the movie but he’s completely wasted. The film ties up loose ends but it feels like a different number of movies.
In the end, Captain America: Brave New World is not the disaster it could have been, but it’s not necessarily a good film and it’s easily my least favorite of the Captain America films.
SCORE: 5/10
