Chrystal Sircely is the president of BIPOC-PAVA (Black, Indigenous, People Of Color of the Performing And Visual Arts.)

Sircely is a senior music education and percussion performance major at SRU.

“This organization serves as a community for all BIPOC performing and visual arts students and allies on campus at Slippery Rock. We strive to create a safe space on campus where students of color can highlight their stories across the arts departments,” Sircely said. “We often bring in guest speakers who are BIPOC professional experiences to share their stories and inspiration with students.”

The organization will be hosting the BIPOC Arts Celebration on February 11 at 7:30 p.m.

“The BIPOC Arts Celebration is an annual event hosted by BIPOC-PAVA in order to create a special night of celebration, remembrance and education of BIPOC artists,” Sircely said.

The event will take place in Miller Auditorium.

“Students can expect to see a diversity of performances through dance, music, theater and visual arts that will be performed by BIPOC students and allies here at Slippery Rock,” Sircely said.

Sircely discussed what she is most excited for regarding the event.

“As a music major, my favorite part about hosting this event every year is getting to see all the other arts departments coming together to create a night of magic,” Sircely said. “Often times, each department in theater, dance and music schedule events that often overlap, so it is so wonderful to have a sure chance to see the other arts majors on campus performing.”

Sircely talked about the benefits of the performance for students.

“These types of events are sure to provide an educational experience, exposure to new cultures or a sense of community and belonging to each and every student. There is something to be taken away from each performance,” Sircely said.

The event is free for students as long as they RSVP through the box office at sru.universitytickets.com.

“We also have ten free tickets for anyone in the community that is not a student who may need one. They can email me at cjs1053@sru.edu for more information,” Sircely said.
