Slippery Rock field hockey faced Frostburg State University yesterday for their annual Morgan’s Message mental health awareness game. The Rock pulled out with a 1-0 win to gain their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win.
After the first period, the game was scoreless, but not without five shots from FSU and a solo shot by Riley Cloude for SRU. Both teams exchanged a total of three penalty corners, but ultimately, nothing came from them.
The second period was aggression-heavy for The Rock, with the team dominating on offense. SRU put up two shots, both blocked by the Bobcats’ goalie Zoe Barnes, and FSU recorded none.
The White and Green tried to break the tie with two penalty corners, but both deflected.
The score stayed the same at 0-0 going into halftime.
FSU came out in the third period, shooting two shots less than two minutes in, both blocked by SRU’s goalie Lea Riegling.
The White and Green went to put up two straight penalty corners with shots. That did not stop the Bobcats’ goalie from putting up back-to-back blocks.
Both goalies showed off their blocking skills throughout the entire game with a total of 14 saves. The four shots on goal that were produced by Frostburg were unsuccessful.
Slippery Rock would put up four more shots before Coral Piramo found the back of the net to give the White and Green the lead with less than a minute left in the period.
This is the sophomore’s second goal of the season. Her other goal was recorded in the first game of the season.
The Rock came out in the fourth period, not allowing any shots to be taken by the Bobcats. They stayed offensively dominated throughout the last period until the final whistle.
Slippery Rock girls field hockey will be back at Milhalik-Thompson Stadium next Wednesday to face Shippensburg University.
