Slippery Rock Softball won both of their doubleheader games at Gannon University on Thursday evening.

The day started off well for The Rock and Alexsa Hurd.

Hurd broke an SRU record, striking out 19 batters in a single game. She had already held the previous record with 16 strikeouts, but took it to another level.

In addition, Hurd also pitched all eight innings of the extra inning thriller and smashed a homerun in game two. This is her sixth complete game of the season as well.

She has also reached over 100 punchouts on the season, now sitting at 108. The star pitcher is also on the hunt for the all-time strikeout record for SRU, currently in second place.

Game one

The Rock rallied late to earn their 4-2 victory in extras for game one.

Gannon got on the board early, lifting a homerun to left field in the first inning to lead 1-0.

SRU finally broke through in the fourth, scoring on a bases loaded hit by pitch and a fielder’s choice. The Green and White looked to add more insurance, but could not, finishing the inning with a 2-1 lead.

Gannon was able to tie the game back up in the bottom half of the inning on an error.

Hurd ran into trouble in the seventh, walking the bases loaded. She persevered and struck out the next two batters to escape the trouble.

Julia Montie and Emma Kennedy both singled in the eighth, both picking up RBIs to put SRU in front 4-2, where Hurd recorded three more strikeouts to finish the game.

Game two

Slippery Rock used the way of the long ball in their 5-2 game two victory.

They recorded three homeruns coming from Montie, Hurd and Shaylyn Shall.

Montie got it rolling early, hitting a two-run shot in the first. Hurd homered in the third to lift their lead to 4-0.

In the fourth, Gannon pushed two runs across to cut the lead in half at 4-2.

Shall homered in the top of the fifth, adding an extra insurance run.

Kayla Williams then spun three scoreless innings to earn the save.

Slippery Rock will travel to Clarion on Friday afternoon to continue conference play and look to get back to .500.
