Slippery Rock women’s basketball took on the No. 23 Gannon University Golden Knights on Wednesday but fell 81-40 at Morrow Field House.
Sophia Hook led the charge by putting up 9 points for The Rock, but the effort was not enough.
The Golden Knights were the first to put points on the board with a three-pointer from Bri Claxon in the first minute of the game. Deryn Moye was quick to steal the ball for SRU but nothing came of it. Claxon threw up another three-pointer shortly after.
Three scoring attempts were made by The Rock with a jump shot and two three-pointers, all coming up empty. Gannon recovered the ball and threw up a layup of their own, making the score 8-0 in the first three minutes.
Gannon put up nine more points before The White and Green scored a layup of their own, delivered by Rebecca Goetz and assisted by Hannah Pugliese.
After a foul on Gannon stamped at 3:38 minutes left in the first quarter, Brooklyn Jones knocked down a triple for The Rock.
The graduate student has tallied 149 points this season.
Quickly after, the Golden Knights delivered a three-pointer of their own, scoring five more points after that and securing a 25-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Within the first minute of the second quarter, Deryn Moye had her second steal of the night. A layup attempt from Kayley Joseph-Bernard followed, but nothing came of it.
Moye was able to put up a season-high in steals, totaling 13 in the season so far.
After another layup, three-point attempt, and three more points from Gannon, Mairan Haggerty shot a layup for The Rock. Carissa Dunham made three points for the Golden Knights, but Endya Robinson was quick to respond adding another layup to SRU’s score.
Gannon made five more points before a foul on them allowed Pugliese to score both free throws. Anye Washington added three more points on top of that. The Rock still fell short 38-14 at the half.
Hook put her first points on the board at the start of the third quarter with a jump shot. Another one followed shortly after. A foul on Slippery Rock gave Gannon two successful free throws, but Goetz came back with a jump shot.
Gannon fouled four more times in the third, giving The Rock seven successful free throws, but their efforts came up short and Gannon continued to dominate the scoreboard, ending the third 58-33.
Starting the fourth with a foul on Slippery Rock gave the Fighting Knights two more points. They put up 19 more points before Ava Darney delivered a three-pointer for The Rock. Washington closed out the fourth with a layup, leaving Gannon with the lead 81-40.
Slippery Rock women’s basketball will take on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown on Saturday at the Sports Center in Johnstown.
