Halloween celebrations can be a hotly-contested topic, and the holiday may be the most highly debated of all holidays. From the best Halloween candy, to when you should stop trick-or-treating to whether candy corn is a delicacy or an abomination, there are hotly-debated opinions everywhere.

The best two arguments of the best Halloween tradition are for trick-or-treating and pumpkin carving. The former feels like the overall peak of Halloween despite it being arguably the most short-lived tradition. Trick-or-treating was more exciting than anything else Halloween-related as a kid. For lack of a better word, it was the most “magical” of Halloween traditions.

Pumpkin carving, on the other hand, almost serves as a more practical pick. It is an activity you can do—and enjoy—your whole life. It is also generally more versatile. You can have a small group of friends, a large gathering or just yourself to make the annual mainstay decorations.

It retains some of the whimsy and holiday fun you see at trick-or-treating, and maintains it for your whole life. Additionally, the point of trick-or-treating is more or less just to collect candy. When you grow out of childhood, you can just buy the candy and enjoy it. You could even eat it while carving pumpkins.

That being said, the pull toward trick-or-treating wins out. Multiple staff members noted they would continue trick-or-treating to this day if it was seen as socially acceptable. Additionally, the longevity of the tradition can be expanded when considering going trick-or-treating with kids as an adult whether babysitting or as a relative. The traditions such as going home to watch Halloween movies after trick-or-treating were also fondly remembered. Perhaps most importantly, dressing up in costumes offers an expression of creativity and personal interests that is hardly available most times of the year.

The conversation of best Halloween candy, as to be expected, received several different answers, including Kit Kat, Heath bar, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, 3 Musketeers and candy corn.

The topic of candy corn, however, was even harder to come to a conclusion on. Some staff members shared that they love candy corn, with one even mentioning they would eat it until they get sick if they had an infinite supply. Conversely, it was difficult to determine what flavor candy corn even is, with the conversation shifting toward the use of unnecessary extra dyes when commercial corn is typically just yellow.
