From Oct. 14 through Oct. 20, SRU students celebrated Pride Week on campus.
October is LGBTQIA+ History Month. Every year RockOUT hosts various events and activities for students on campus.
These events give individuals the opportunity to get involved and learn more about LGBTQIA+ History.
“RockOUT is Slippery Rock University’s student-run queer club. We are also open to allies, it’s really just a club that tries to foster connection between individuals within the queer community and between queer students and non-queer students,” Asher Dodge, RockOUT president, said.
RockOUT provides a safe space for students to gather with weekly meetings and various activities.
During Pride Week, RockOUT hosted multiple events throughout the week, including “blue Monday,” karaoke night, a pizza party and a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Dodge shared their favorite event during Pride Week.
“I am very much between The Rocky Horror Picture Show and karaoke. Both of them were really fun, everyone was super engaged with Rocky Horror, participating the whole time. A lot of people dressed up, put face paint on, some people were very, very familiar with Rocky Horror and the interactive script,” Dodge said. “And with Karaoke, it was just a grand time. Everyone was loving it, singing their favorite songs and everything.”
Dodge feels that hosting these events help to raise awareness on campus.
“We just want to shout-out to all the queer students and be like, ‘hey, come hang out because we are part of the same community and things are tough, so we should prioritize our relationships with each other and hold each other up and support everybody,'” Dodge said. “And also with Pride Week, and especially our big events, the goal is for non-queer students to come and experience queer culture, specifically with Rocky Horror and also our drag events.”
The organization hosts various events throughout the semester.
