On Friday, Oct. 3, students at Slippery Rock University attended the Moonlight Drag Brunch.
This event was organized by the Pride Center, Office for Inclusive Excellence and the Leadership Development Institute.
The Moonlight Drag Brunch consisted of drag numbers, catered food and free items for students.
The drag numbers were put on by three different performers: Wanda Bread, Silly Billy and Phoebe R.
Ryland Marcelo, an SRU student, shared his feelings about the event and having this kind of representation here on campus.
“I am so excited to have an event like this on campus. I love the joy these events bring to campus and it makes me feel a sense of belonging,” Marcelo said. “Events such as these drew me into campus because of the representation that Slippery Rock has for students like me. Other campuses don’t have events like this one.”
Another student, Martina Baughnan, shared her feelings on the event as well.
“I had the time of my life. I honestly think I screamed so hard that I lost my voice. This is my first drag show and it’s such a beautiful experience to be here. I would love it if they had one once a month,” Baughnan said.
The event lasted for two hours. The performers performed three different numbers individually, and then did a group number together.
Wanda Bread, a drag queen who performed at the Moonlight Drag Brunch, shared their opinion on performing at Slippery Rock and the importance of representation on campus.
“There’s something special about getting to be someone’s first experience with live drag performers. It’s an amazing experience and I can tell it means a lot to the students. I can only hope that I leave a kind and welcoming impression on them,” Bread said.
“It’s extremely important to see queer representation on more rural university campuses. Every LGBTQ+ student deserves to experience unbridled pride, and being able to contribute to that in any way means the world to me,” Bread said. “We are all experiencing this world for the first time at the same time as one another. There is no right or wrong way to live your life.”
The Office of Inclusive Excellence and the Pride Center are planning to host more events similar to this one.
