Rock surrenders late lead despite Gillin's best efforts

Slippery Rock women’s basketball team fell in overtime on the road against Walsh University.

Alyssa Gillin opened the scoring for The Rock with a layup in the paint within the first minute of the game.

Walsh was quick to retaliate with a pair of layups of their own.

Both teams traded baskets before the White and Green dominated the court with 14 points behind two three-pointers, two free throws, two layups and a jumper.

The Cavaliers managed to get four layups and a jumper, but went into the second period facing a three-point deficit.

Walsh tied up the scoreboard with a jumper 42 seconds into the second. They had another chance to score on a layup, but it was denied by Gillin.

After another missed layup, Sophia Hook took the rebound, opening the court for Mairan Haggerty to knock down a three-pointer, putting The Rock back in front at 22-19.

The Cavaliers reclaimed the lead again behind two layups and a jumper, edging ahead by one.

The advantage was short-lived. Gillin broke out into a six-point burst on back-to-back three-pointers, putting Slippery Rock up 30-25 going into the half.

The senior led the charge, scoring 18 points throughout the game, along with five rebounds, five blocks and a steal. With those five blocks, she now ranks fifth in program history for a single game.

Opening the third period, Walsh University attempted to close the gap with two layups in the first two minutes. SRU retaliated with two of their own to extend the gap.

The Cavaliers gained 10 more points in the remainder of the period. Four free throws and a layup delivered by their Kiley Dyrlund and two layups from Emma Dretke kept a close race.

The White and Green held their advantage, rounding out the third period with 12 points behind two three-pointers, two layups and a jumper.

Scoring slowed in the fourth, with both teams battling for control.

Gillin delivered another layup in the paint, only for Dyrlund to do the same for Walsh.

With nine minutes left, the Cavaliers hit a three-pointer, closing that deficit to two.

For the following three minutes, both teams attempted shots but did not find the bottom of the net.

The Rock broke the dry spell with two points from Iyanna Wade. The freshman tallied 15 points during the game to add to her total of 80 in the season so far.

Eight more points came for the White and Green, but Walsh managed to even the score with 12 of their own to go into overtime.

In the extra minutes, the Cavaliers dominated the court and pulled out the win. The first two minutes remained scoreless before a layup came from Carlota Lopez for Walsh.

Ten points were scored in the final minute of the game, seven of which were from Walsh. Four free throws and a three-pointer edged out Slippery Rock 67-61.

The Rock now turns their focus to the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game of this season, which takes place on Saturday against Mansfield.
