For the second consecutive season, Slippery Rock women’s basketball fell to Glenville State University 89-75 on Saturday.
The Pioneers would get on the board first when, following a foul from Karianna Woods, a free throw from Carine Pinkney put GSU up 1-0.
Glenville State extended their early lead behind a three-pointer from Ashlyn Riley, before SRU’s Alyssa Gillin would respond with one of her own.
Slippery Rock would take the next five points, all courtesy of freshman Iyanna Wade.
After momentarily taking the lead back with a three-point shot from Jayda Allie, a pair of free throws and a layup from Gillin gave SRU the 12-9 advantage.
Both teams would trade equal blows for the remainder of the first quarter, with The Rock taking a three-point lead heading into the second.
SRU started off the second quarter hot, with a three-pointer and layup from Deryn Moye in the first 43 seconds.
After chipping away at the deficit, GSU would find the equalizer with 4:15 remaining in the half, when a layup from Nwando Okigbo knotted the teams up at 36.
A pair of three’s from Pinkey in the final 45 seconds gave Glenville State a 4-point advantage heading into the locker room.
Following the break, both teams would struggle to find the bottom of the net, before a pair of free throws by Payton James extended the Pioneers’ lead to six.
Gillin would continue her solid performance, responding with a three-point shot to cut the score to 45-48.
Another long-range shot from Okigbo extended the Pioneers’ lead to ten, the largest difference of the day for either team.
A pair of layups from Mairan Haggerty cut the deficit to five with 4:13 remaining in the third.
After a three from James extended the GSU lead back to eight, SRU would take nine of the next 11 points, down by just one heading into the fourth quarter.
A three-pointer from Sophia Hook gave Slippery Rock their first lead since late in the second quarter.
Despite the momentum, Glenville State would take control of the remaining eight minutes of the game, outscoring Slippery Rock 24-6.
Glenville State shot an impressive 56.25% from the field in the fourth quarter, compared to Slippery Rock’s 18.75%.
For The Rock, Gillin led the charge with 22 points, followed by Wade with 17 and Haggerty with 15.
Kayley Joseph-Bernard played all 40 minutes, registering 13 rebounds and seven blocks, the latter of which being the most blocks in a single game for The Rock since 1985.
Slippery Rock women’s basketball will travel across the state border for the first time this season when they head to Tiffin University on Wednesday, Nov. 26 to take on the Dragons.
