SRSGA met formally on Monday, September 8th at 5pm in the Smith Student Center to appoint new senators and welcome those in attendance to the upcoming semester.

ROTC Discussion

A student representative named Carla Snodgrass from the Commission of the Veteran and Military Officer Affairs seized the opportunity of the open forum to discuss the ROTC program on campus.

“Currently the United States Army is working on facing our ROTC program under another host school. This will affect the ROTC students first, but then it will affect Slippery Rock as well. ROTC staffing will go down to five positions I believe,” stated Snodgrass.

The United States Army is currently undergoing a major reorganization of its ROTC programs on college campuses. This includes shutting down or restructuring pre-established ROTC programs, which could potentially disrupt students’ training schedules, scholarship opportunities and long-term career planning.

Further on in the forum, Karen Riley, University President, addressed Snodgrass’s concerns regarding the ROTC program.

“We are working hard in that space. It is a federal issue and we have very, very, very limited impact; but we’re trying and we’ll continue to be good advocates for all of our students, including those who happen to be in the ROTC program.”

Inducted Senators

Motions to approve SRSGA’s newly inducted senators passed uncontested. SRSGA approved Ella Eyler as a Senator for the College of Engineering and Science; Mason Powell as a Senator for the College of Education; Regan Atkins as a Senator for Fall Athletics; Adrian Almonte as a Residence Hall Senator; Peter Alberti as a At-Large Senator; Anna Goberish as a Transfer Senator; and Alexis Passmore, Voltarine Ouroboros and Gavin Wade as First-Year Senators.
