The Slippery Rock tennis season began by traveling to Oberlin, Ohio for the Oberlin College Invitational over the weekend.

The Rock sent eight athletes to compete at the tournament,  which was held from Sept. 9-11. Each athlete competed individually, as there was no team competition.

Three players for Slippery Rock finished the singles weekend with a 2-0 record. Junior Nina Barbano, sophomore Amanda Bruscemi and freshman Lacey Cohen all went 2-o, while seniors Tiffany Kollah and Kylee Woodman along with sophomore Allie Welch finished their weekends off at 1-1.

SRU head coach Matt Meredith was proud of the way his team played in their first real action this year.

“I thought they performed very well with not getting Thursday’s practice in and I’m very happy,” Meredith said.

Doubles play featured two Slippery Rock teams finishing unbeaten.

Pacing The Rock were the duos of  Barbano and Bruscemi and junior Carla Corrochano Moracho and Cohen going 2-0. Corrochano Moracho and Cohen look to be The Rock’s top double pair, while Barbano and Bruscemi had a 9-1 record as a pair in doubles play last year.

The pairing of senior Stephanie Fortier and Woodman finished the weekend with a 1-1 record.

“The chemistry was good, but we need to get better at attacking the net more and taking charge of the middle,” Meredith said. “But we are starting to strive, and it was a very good win.”

The tennis team returns to action in Erie, Penn. for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships, from Sept. 17-19.

“We got a big tournament this weekend. Although it doesn’t count for team, it’s individual and the top kids of the region,” Meredith added about the team’s next tournament.

The home opener for the team is Saturday, Sept. 24 against West Liberty University.
