Despite not earning a berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs, the Rock softball team still has one game left to play this week.
The waiting game.
The Rock (27-17 overall, 7-13 PSAC) must now sit and wait to hear if it will earn a spot in the Division II East Regional Tournament. The announcement is scheduled to come sometime after the conclusion of the PSAC Championships this Saturday.
"Having to wait sucks," freshman Jordan Zuenges said. "It would be nice to be playing right now, but you know, waiting just means that instead of two full weeks of practice and games, we only really get one (week) if we make it."
But in order to put themselves into the position to wait, the Rock had to take care of business last week. The team did so, wrapping up the regular season by taking three of four from Clarion and California University of Pennsylvania.
Last Friday the Rock tied the school record for victories with a doubleheader sweep of PSAC doormat Clarion. The Green and White won by scores of 5-4 and 6-1.
In the first game, it was senior Stacey Rhoades (8-4) getting the win with another strong outing, scattering eight hits and three runs over five innings of work.
With the score tied at 1-1, the Rock plated three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead it would never relinquish.
The three-run rally was aided by an RBI double from freshman Sheree Horvath, who went 3-for-4 in the game with a solo home run and two RBIs.
Clarion clawed its way back into the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth but would get no closer.
Both teams traded runs in the sixth before junior Lisa Getgen shut the door on the Golden Eagles with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Getgen threw two innings, allowing one run on one hit to earn the save.
In game two, it was Getgen who got the start. She didn ' t disappoint, carrying the momentum from game one over to the second game and tossing a complete-game five-hitter. She allowed one unearned run while fanning three.
