After a proposal last week during a Student Government Association meeting to eliminate the four faculty members and one administrative member serving on the Cooperative Activities Board, those members said this week that they believe they're being targeted for unrealistic reasons.
An April 18 Rocket article explained a suggestion given by SGA Vice President of Financial Affairs Michael Combs during the April 17 SGA meeting to remove faculty members from Co-Op board.
Combs claimed that since SGA is a student organization, faculty should be excluded from serving and voting on the board.
"I don't think that any members should be non-students," Combs said yesterday. "Having them vote isn't needed. It's ridiculous."
SGA President Larry Brink agrees that faculty members on the Co-Op board shouldn't be allowed to vote.
"I think there is a tremendous advantage in having the presence of faculty members during these meetings to get their perspective," Brink said yesterday. "I just don't think they should get a vote."
The four faculty members on the Co-Op board, who were appointed by the SRU Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculty members, are Mark Chase, an associate professor in the communication department, Joanne Leight, an assistant professor of physical education, Itzi Meztli, an assistant professor of education, and Deb Hutchins, an assistant professor of therapeutic recreation.
Also, Edward Hess, the assistant vice president of finance, was hired to be a part of Co-Op because of his expertise in finance.
Chase, Leight, Meztli, Hutchins and Hess, who are all on the board voluntarily, were listed as attending 35, 47, 53, 35 and 29 percent of the Co-Op meetings, respectively.
Earlier this semester, Combs discussed the removal of faculty at a Co-Op meeting. This is the first time he has proposed this to SGA.
Combs was behind an effort last fall to reduce the APSCUF faculty members on the board from four to two.

To eliminate non-students from the Co-Op Board is something that is just not going to happen. I am "amused" that Mr. Combs seems to have done absolutely no research on this subject. (Continued…)

I was part of SGA a few years back, I might have only been a senator, but this is disappointing. It seems like this executive board is out only for their own selfish purpose. (Continued…)
