Shell-shocked.
That's one way to explain the Rock lacrosse team's 20-2 road loss against the Shippensburg Red Raiders on Wednesday, dropping the team's record to 0-13 overall and 0-11 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
The loss capped off the end of a brutal three-game road stretch that saw the Rock take on then-No. 6-ranked Lock Haven and then-No. 4-ranked West Chester.
"(The Shippensburg loss) all boiled down to a really slow start," Rock Head Coach Emily Boosahda said. "We were used to playing these premier teams and it took us a while to get used to it."
The Rock gave up 13 of the 20 goals in the first period, with seven of those coming in the first 15 minutes of the match. Junior Caitlin O'Brien stopped the bleeding, tallying the Rock's lone goal in the first period to bring the score to 8-1.
In the second period the team kept the Red Raiders from adding to the score for the first 10 minutes of the second period.
Senior Jayme Timmons added the Rock's final goal with 12:27 left in the contest. Sophomore goaltenders Ashley Winkelspecht and Sara Williams recorded a combined eight saves.
Though the game may not have gone as the Rock would have hoped, the squad's strong performance in the second period helped the team to wash away the slow start of the first period.
In particular, the second half helped build momentum for SRU's next contest, a rematch with rival Indiana University of Pennsylvania at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
"The second half got us back on track and helped prepare for us for IUP on Monday." Boosahda said. "If we go out and play a whole 60 minutes, they're a team we can be highly competitive with, maybe even pull out a win. I think it's a game the team has been excited about."
Another positive for the Rock has been the improved play of freshmen Chelsey Rovesti and Meghan Dougherty, two players Boosahda tabbed as having played their best games of the season against Shippensburg.
The Rock's previous contest with IUP resulted in one of the team's most competitive matches of the season, a 14-7 loss on the Crimson Hawks' home turf on April 2.
One advantage for the Rock will be that after the road stretch, it will enter the contest rested, having had only one game this week, allowing the team to rest up and get healthy.
