When your ship begins to sink, the first thought that comes to mind is jumping off.

And it would seem natural to assume that the SRU softball team, which has yet to win a game in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, would be looking to abandon ship.

But those making that assumption would be wrong.

Despite an 0-8 record in the PSAC West, which puts them in the cellar with 3-16 Clarion, the Rock (16-10 overall) knows that the sea on which the team is sailing is getting calmer.

"We have faced the top three pitchers in the conference over the last few games," Rock Head Coach Vashion Johnson said. "We are lucky to get Lock Haven and IUP out of the way earlier in the schedule, because other teams don't have that luxury."

Coming off of a doubleheader sweep of Salem International last Thursday, it looked as if the team had righted the ship.

But back-to-back doubleheader losses at the hands of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Edinboro brought on new problems and more water.

The Rock lost at IUP last Saturday by scores of 3-2, and 5-4.

In game one, SRU was held to just three hits, as IUP's Erin Halloway baffled the Rock lineup to the tune of 14 strikeouts.

Sophomore Sheree Horvath gave the Rock an early 1-0 advantage with a leadoff home run in the top of third.

The Rock pushed the lead to 2-0 after Halloway's wild pitch in the fourth allowed senior Stacey Rhoades to score from third.

The Rock appeared to have things in control before IUP roared back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

Any thought of an SRU comeback was quickly erased thanks to back-to-back-to-back strikeouts in the top of the seventh.

Rhoades was the losing pitcher, allowing three earned runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out one.
