Chelsea Clinton visited SRU on Friday to discuss the views and platforms of her mother, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and also to answer questions and address concerns from audience members.

"I'm so happy to be here on behalf of my mom," said Chelsea Clinton, who began the discussion at about 11 a.m. in front of a standing-room-only crowd in the University Union's Multi-Purpose Room. "I know of lot of you are still thinking of who you will support, and I think talking to you all is important."

Chelsea Clinton introduced herself as well as urging the audience members to watch debates and visit the Web sites of all candidates. She then opened the floor for questions.

Some of the questions brought to Chelsea Clinton's attention addressed issues such as how her mother plans to end the No Child Left Behind Act, how Hillary plans to generate funding to increase protection against domestic violence and if the former First Lady will continue to stand by the issues she supports.

The issue of the cost of student loans was also discussed, with Chelsea Clinton noting that her mother has been fighting to make loans more accessible and affordable for students.

"My mom has made Pell Grants available for the summer," Chelsea Clinton said. "This summer will be the first summer that will go into effect."

Hillary Clinton also wants to get rid of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

"The FAFSA is a cumbersome and expensive process," Chelsea Clinton said. "She doesn't think it should be difficult to apply for aid."

Catherine Massey, an associate professor of psychology, asked how Hillary Clinton plans to ensure that lesbian and gay couples receive the same benefits as heterosexual couples.

Chelsea Clinton said her mom wants to extend equal benefits, end Don't Ask Don't Tell and eliminate discrimination in the federal income tax code.
