The Rock finally made its home debut Tuesday afternoon against Gannon University, sweeping the doubleheader by the scores of 9-5 and 4-3 behind a hot offense and a tough bullpen. "It was good to get out on the field, we made some mistakes just because we were inactive so long," Rock Head Coach Jeff Messer said.
There is an old saying in sports: "Offense wins games, but defense wins championships." Over the past few seasons, the Slippery Rock University softball team has won a lot of games, thanks in large part to their offensive prowess. But they haven't won any championships.
On April 26 and 27, SRU football standout Mike Butterworth, an offensive lineman from Northern Cambria, Pa., plans to spend the weekend at his home with family and some close friends. The Slippery Rock women's water polo squad (2-9 overall, 1-3 Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division) has had a problem offensively all season. The team's defense has been stout, but the Rock was unable to score many goals over its first 10 games.
Offensive lineman Mike Butterworth wasn't the only SRU athlete making an impression at Tuesday's pro day in Morrow Field House. SRU track sensation Brad Mueller attended the pro day as well, running really fast, clocking in with a 4.24 in the 40-yard dash.
Another week has come and gone, and the Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team is still searching for its first win. SRU suffered another setback on March 21, losing 23-2 on the road to the Bloomsburg University Huskies. Freshman midfielder Alison Rusnak scored the Rock's first goal in the opening period, one that saw sophomore goalie Ashley Winkelspecht make 10 saves against a potent Bloomsburg offense that registered a whopping 31 shots in the stanza.
