Jaime Wright, a junior communication major and Jessica Hickey, a sophomore communication major, won unanimously and will now be serving on the SGA senate as commuter senators.
"I always wanted to be a part of the Student Government Association, and help my peers work for the future," Wright said.
"Being involved in the committees and making decisions is really exciting to me and important," Hickey said.
"I look forward to getting involved with all the SGA activities."
Jessica Cosme, a sophomore political science major, will be serving as an active senator for Building B.
Three people ran for the position, but Cosme won unanimously.
"I was extremely involved in high school activities and committees, and I felt I would fit the position the best," Cosme said.
The new members were sworn in directly after being voted into the senate, so that they could vote for the opened Co-Op position.
SGA Senator Steve Winslow, a senior history major, was elected over three other SGA senators to serve on the Board of Cooperative Activities.
"I'm a senior I have no agenda when helping set the budgets for next year," Winslow said. "I have sat in on many of the Co-Op meetings, and look forward to helping the board."
SGA President Larry Brink noted that elections for the Vice President of Advancement position would be opened to the campus and will be voted on at the next SGA meeting on Jan. 31.
Brink said that applications for the position are due in the SGA office on Jan. 28.
In other SGA news, Brink said that SRU received the Pittsburgh 250 Grant for $5,000 to expand the green programs.
"It was an extremely competitive grant," Brink said. "Only about 80 of the 500 applicants were awarded the grant."
Brink said that the $5,000 will be split between the tree-planting program and the Green Bike Initiative on campus.
The Green Bike Initiative, which includes members of the Cycling Club, buys used bicycles and secures a mechanic and parts inventory for bicycle repairs.
The 'grassroots' grant was awarded on Dec. 19, 2007, and is from the nonprofit organization Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections.
Grants are distributed through The Sprout Fund, a division that supports innovative grassroots community projects.
SRU began the tree-planting program last spring and has since planted over 100 trees.
