Students will be asked to attend the letter-writing campaign with the names and addresses of 50 people and will then be asked to use the addresses they collected to send out pre-written letters asking for financial support for St. Jude.

Then, the rest of the night will consist of a visit from a patient from St. Jude Hospital, games, food, dancing, a carnival, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a craft station.

According to the St. Jude Web site, the event, also called "Up 'til Dawn for St. Jude," has taken place at more than 154 college campuses across America, with the event beginning in 1998 at the University of Memphis.

The program has raised more than $10 million since 2006.

The event not only seeks to bring in individuals, but also on-campus organizations to form teams to help strengthen support for the cause.

Jamie Vargason, a senior education major, said "Up 'til 2 for St. Jude" will be a great event for students to give back to the community and feel like they have accomplished something.

"We feel it is important for students to get involved and help with an issue that affects a lot of children who have some of the most devastating diseases," Vargason said.

The event, which begins at 9 p.m., is taking place at the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center and costs $5 at the door for students who are not pre-registered. It is being funded by the Association of Residence Halls Students and the National Residence Hall Honorary.

Somerville hopes the event will become a staple at SRU for years to come.

"We are hoping this will be an ongoing program the university and SRU students will want to take part in and (that they will) want to show that the students at SRU can make a difference," Somerville said.
