However, this week, there seems to be another sound coming out of Swope Music Hall: the talk about a musical protégée's visit to the university on Dec. 1.
While some students may not know Maureen McGovern, she is someone who many Americans are familiar seeing on Broadway and in musical halls across the country.
Known as "The Stradivarius Voice," (a very fine violin), McGovern grew up in Boardman, Ohio, and rose to stardom for singing the song "The Morning After" in the 1972 film, "The Poseidon Adventure."
After winning an Oscar and reaching to the top of the musical charts in 1973, McGovern won another Oscar for her song "We May Never Love Like This Again," from the 1974 film classic, "The Towering Inferno."
With her Oscar wins and her musical success, McGovern traveled the world receiving International Gold Records from the United States, Australia, Canada and the Philippines.
This led McGovern to sing in more musical performances, including "Another Woman in Love," "State of the Heart," "Naughty Baby" and "Baby I'm Yours."
McGovern also did acting and voice work in some films, but is more commonly known for her performance in "Little Women, The Musical" in 2005, "The King And I," "Letters From 'Nam," "The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg," and "The Bengal Tiger's Ball."
But on Dec. 1, McGovern will bring her experience as a musical performer to SRU to sing with 50 students from the university choir.
One of the students who will be singing with McGovern is Christiana Howell, a senior music education major.
Howell said that while she is excited to be singing with McGovern, she also believes McGovern will bring exposure to the university choir.
