It's not about the guts or the glory.

It's about the experience, and above all, it's all about fun.

This year, more than 4,500 of Slippery Rock's students have chosen to participate in one of the many intramural sports leagues offered by Campus Recreation.

Flag football, soccer, ultimate frisbee and volleyball are just a few of the leagues that are in operation through the Intramural Sports Program.

In addition, there are also tournaments held on weekends for one-pitch softball, dodgeball and pre-season basketball.

Robert "Posey" Rhoads, the Coordinator of Intramural Sports and Facility Operations, explained the purpose of the intramural program.

"It provides a sports-based activity for students to participate in," Rhoads said. "And above all, it's fun."

In the past two years, the program has increased by more than 1,000 student participants.

There are three levels of competition: competitive, intermediate and recreational.

"With the different levels of competition, we can provide something for all students," Rhoads said.

The competitive division of each league fights for the Slippery Rock University Intramural Sports Championship Mug.

The intermediate league winners receive t-shirts, but there are no awards given to the recreational league. But it is not really about the awards, Rhoads said.

"The program provides a great avenue to meet people and develop leadership skills," he said. "Students need activities that allow them to get away from it all."

Despite the fact that the main goal is fun, the programs are still taken very seriously.

For each program there is a set of written rules and an expected code of conduct.
