SRU needs to re-prioritize
Issue date: 10/5/07 Section: Rocket Letters
To the editor:
I noticed through SRU's Web site over the summer that the university's art department had obtained accreditation.
As my daughter is an art major at SRU, I was pleased with the news. What I fail to understand is why the art department and its facilities do not seem to receive the same attention the rest of the campus has.
Last year I heard stories of overcrowding and not enough room to work properly. As of this date (early October), the temperature in the sculpture studio is 88 degrees. I'm pretty sure the art majors are paying the same tuition as science majors.
In addition, it seems to me that it should be more important to provide adequate facilities for the students' educational needs prior to building, for example, a new student union.
I understand that plans are in place to provide proper art facilities, but a location needs to be found.
It is my opinion that SRU obviously failed to properly prioritize when making its expansive redo of the campus. Is it really more important to sleep in a beautiful, outrageously priced dorm and do whatever in a new student union center than to be able to obtain an education in adequate facilities?
Yes, the campus is looking beautiful, but at what price?
