Homecoming. The word alone evokes images of parades, cookouts and football. It's a chance to get together with old friends and maybe make a few new ones. Kings and queens, pep rallies and fireworks, SRU Homecoming seems to have it all. On Oct. 13, many SRU alumni will make their way back to the campus they called home for at least a few years of their lives.
The SRU campus will be buzzing with activity next week as the 2007 Homecoming: Rockopoly, kicks off in full force. The Homecoming football game against Clarion will be held at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The game will be one of the concluding events following the week-full of performances, guest speakers and special events for students to participate in.
Rachel's Roadhouse, conveniently located on Route 19 and just five minutes from the Grove City's Prime Outlets, is one of seven restaurants in the Springfield Restaurant Group. Of the seven, Rachel's is regarded as having the most laid-back atmosphere. Despite the fact that it is located in a country setting, I would consider it to be the type of place that appeals not only to a college crowd, but also to anyone who is looking for a family meal.
Disney has always been a marketing machine, but there has been an influx of young, teen superstars popping their way out of that machine the past few years. With tween juggernauts like the made-for-TV pop star Miley Cyrus ("Hanna Montana"), Kyle Massey ("Cory in the House") and those crazy "High School Musical" kids, Disney is very close to, if not already celebrating, taking over the world.
Hunger is a problem that many SRU students have never had to seriously deal with, but for some individuals within the Western Pennsylvania region, it's a reality. On Oct. 15, the Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Nonprofit Leadership, along with the help from the art department, AVI Foodsystems Inc.
The Hispanic culture will be explored and celebrated during this month's Hispanic Cultures Series with events that began Oct. 4 and run through Oct. 23. The events are meant to help enlighten, educate and entertain students and staff. The original organizers of the series, Thomas Daddesio and Ana Maria Caula, both assistant professors in the modern languages and cultures department, started the series in 2003.
