Slippery Rock field hockey has had problems scoring all season. Over its first five games, the Rock (0-10 overall, 0-6 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) was shut out four times.
But things have begun to improve on offense and SRU has tallied five goals in the last five games.
"We have been playing harder and our passing patterns have been strong," junior Jennifer Venet said. "If we continue to improve on our games from the past, we should play better down the stretch."
Helping to lead the charge offensively has been senior Ashley Stoner, Venet and freshman Samantha Badaczewski.
Stoner has the team lead in goals with three, while Stoner and Badaczewski each have two. When the Rock hosted No. 10 nationally ranked Mansfield (6-4, 3-4 PSAC), the offensive attack produced multiple scoring chances but was not able to follow through.
Mansfield dominated much of the first half, failing to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities.
The Rock fell behind 4-0 late in the second half and its chances of scoring seemed bleak. But The Rock continued to attack the net, earning a penalty shot with 13 seconds remaining. Stoner took the shot and beat the goalie to score her team-best third goal of the season.
The loss was The Rock's 25th straight.
The Rock's next two games will mark the end of a six-game stretch of facing nationally ranked opponents.
The Rock will next play Bloomsburg (8-1, 5-1) Saturday at 12 p.m. in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
