Despite the rocky start to the season for SRU's field hockey team, one player provided the team with a glimmer of hope for the future.
True freshman Samantha Badaczewski nearly helped the Rock gain its first victory of the season in a game against Bellarmine (5-4) on Sunday.
SRU (0-8 overall, 0-4 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) almost beat Bellarmine earlier in the season, losing in a shoot-out on Sept. 1.
But the second time around, there would be no shootout.
Instead, the game was decided in regulation, but the result was just as dramatic.
Bellarmine's momentum was halted twice by Badaczewski, as both her goals tied the game.
Trailing late in the second half, Badaczewski netted a goal with 26 minutes to play, giving the Rock an opportunity to win. Senior Ashley Stoner and freshman Katie Krouse assisted Badaczweski on her goals.
However, Bellarmine was awarded a penalty shot with seven minutes left and the Rock was unable to tie the game as the Rock dropped the contest, 3-2.
However, the two goals scored tied the most goals the team has scored in a game all season.
The Rock also had scored two goals in its season opener against Seton Hill.
"Scoring helps make the transition easier and I feel I am contributing to the team," said Badaczewski. "It feels good to score because I know I am helping the team and it gives us something to build on for the future."
Even with the offensive success against Bellarmine, the Rock regressed against Indiana University of Pennsylvania (6-2, 3-1) on Wednesday.
The Crimson Hawks dominated the match-up and cruised to a 7-0 victory.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for SRU, as they will face off against ranked opponents in their next six consecutive games.
The Rock, which has now lost 23 straight games dating back to last year's season opening victory, will travel to East Stroudsburg for a 12:30 match-up on Saturday.
