After only three games, Slippery Rock's field hockey team has already been involved in a shootout.

Not the pistols-at-dawn kind of shootout, but the kind that comes after 100 minutes of intense action,

A win-or-go-home, sudden death shootout, which decided the fate of a game. While SRU lost the contest, the effort put forth may hint at success down the road for the Rock.

The Rock (0-3) played well in the first two contests, but had to face Bloomsburg for their third match-up. Bloomsburg won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and a National Championship with a 24-0 (14-0) record in 2006.

Bloomsburg dominated SRU, winning 12-0 while not allowing the Rock to fire off a single shot.

While the loss to Bloomsburg was a setback, there are many reasons for optimism. Freshmen are already playing a key role for the Rock.

True freshman goalie Lisa Belcastro, making her first collegiate start, was the goalie who held Bellarmine (Ky.) scoreless for those 100 excruciating minutes.

The contribution of freshman is vital to the program, which has lost 18 straight games dating back to last season. SRU has eight freshmen, while there are only seven seniors on the roster.

Offensively, the senior midfielders have been leading the attack. Ashley Stoner and Lara Winters have been vital in the offensive progression, despite the Rock only having scored two goals this season. Stoner netted a goal in the season opening 3-2 loss to Seton Hill. Junior Jennifer Venet has the only other Rock goal this year.

Sophomore Kelly Denard said the field hockey team has set their sights high for this season.

"We have a good group of recruits who can keep us competitive in games," Denard said. "We should be able to win seven games this year."

The Rock will look to get in the win column when they battle C.W. Post Saturday at 12 p.m. in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
